VVale /VAYLE/ n: A valley. Chiefly used in old poetry. The figurative sense, employed in Hymns #34, 85, 116 and 251, has several definitions. One, according to OED, is "[t]he world regarded as a place of trouble, sorrow or misery (Hymn #85--"poverty's vale"; Hymn #116--"vale of tears.") Another similar sense referenced in OED is "[t]he world regarded as the scene of life with various qualifications as earthly, mortal, of life" (Hymn #34--"vales of the free"; Hymn #251--"vale of peace.") Vanquished /VAN kwished/ adj: Conquered, defeated, overcome. Hymn #325
Verdant /VUR dint/ adj: Green, covered by green vegetation. Hymns #33, 109
Verdure /VUR jur/ n: Green vegetation or the color thereof. By extension, a healthy or flourishing condition. Hymn #42
Vex /VEX/: To irritate, disturb or annoy, especially in a nagging way. Hymn #147
Vice /VISE/ n: Evil or wicked conduct. An evil action or habit. In general, depravity or corruption. Hymn #278
Vigil /VIH ghil/: n. A watch at night. Also, observation or surveillance, especially for religious reasons. Hymn #264
